Remodeling vs Renovation: What's the Difference?

Remodeling and renovation and often used interchangeably. Sure, it may not seem like such a big problem, but in reality, the two terms have slight differences. They focus on different aspects and you should know these differences if you intend to make some changes in your house. Let’s be fair – improving your house is not a process that happens overnight, and in order to do it right, you need to make smart decisions.

So, which one is it, then? Is it remodeling, or is it renovation?

We are here to help you make the best decision for your house. Below you can find information on remodeling vs renovation, and whether remodeling a bathroom or a house is what you need instead of renovation and vice-versa. Let’s get started!

Remodeling vs Renovation – What Is the Difference?

If you’re looking for a quick answer, then here is what remodeling and renovation mean.

Renovating is the act of refreshing, invigorating, or reviving a place. It means that you are restoring it to a better condition by making reparations and making it as good as new.

Remodeling, on the other hand, is the act of remaking something. You are changing the structure of a place, creating something new.

Can you see it now? Even though both of them have the purpose of improving the aspect and functionality of a house or a certain space in the house, they are completely different processes.

Which One Is More Expensive?

These two procedures are also different when it comes to costs.

Remodeling tends to be pricier, which makes sense considering it is a more complex process. It often requires professional help, and even permits, which all add to the cost. Remodeling can range from $5,000 to $150,000.

As for renovations, they are cheaper, but their prices also differ based on the particular project. The size of the house/room you want to renovate will have a significant impact on the price.

What Are Some Common Remodeling Projects?

Remodeling involves many things and because it is very difficult, it can change a house completely. When remodeling, one can either raise ceilings, remove walls, combine two rooms to make a larger one, change a room’s layout, and many similar things.

What Are Some Common Renovation Projects?

Renovation projects may include replacing a window, an outdated heating system, cabinets, or old tiles, as well as adding some new hardware, repainting, and adding new light fixtures.

The Benefits of Renovation

Renovation is a less intense process compared to remodeling, but it has its benefits.

1. It’s a DIY-Friendly Process

Renovating a house is not as difficult and complex as remodeling, and for this reason, it is more DIY-friendly. Therefore, you don’t need to hire professionals and spend more money than necessary. You only need the right tools and you can start the process yourself. This applies when it comes to things like hanging new doors, applying wallpaper, painting, and anything of the sort.

2. It’s the Only Improvement Allowed for Historic Homes

If you want to remodel an old, Victorian home that is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, we have some bad news for you – you are not allowed to remodel it. All you can do is make renovations, so they really come in handy in this situation.

3. It Brings Better ROI

When you are renovating a house, you are working on making improvements and perhaps even fixing a few things here and there. Although it is not as pricey as remodeling, it offers a much better return on investment (ROI). After all, combining two rooms in one may look great if you want to add more space, but if you are dealing with leaks and water damage and don’t fix them, you will not get any buyers.

4. You Don’t Always Need a Permit

Remodeling a house requires you to have a permit at all times. However, renovating doesn’t always need a permit. It all depends on each project. If you are only installing new carpets or you are painting around the house, you will not need a permit.

5. Improvements Are Made While the Structure Stays the Same

When you are renovating a house, you are improving its feel and look. You either make updates or repair things that don’t work anymore. This all happens while the purpose of the house will not be changed. The bedroom, kitchen, bathroom, and everything else will stay the same.

The Benefits of Remodeling

Despite being more complex, remodeling also brings some advantages, as follows:

1. You Can Change a Home’s Structure

When remodeling a house, you are changing the entire design or functionality of an area. This means you may change the layout or add more space. It often requires tearing walls or reconfiguring the entire layout of a home.

As a result, you can make a smaller area more spacious. This is a great way to possibly make the family spend more time together in a certain room. Or maybe you need a bigger kitchen. This can also be achieved through a kitchen remodeling project.

2. Remodeling Helps Fix a Bad Home Design

Not all houses are done perfectly. Some might even look quite unwelcoming or impractical. In this case, you should make some changes to make the home more pleasant to live in. For instance, you may have a kitchen sink installed in the exterior wall, making the water freeze during the cold season. Remodeling is the only way to fix such issues.
